Developing the pictograms for the Olympics is a dream for every designer. A dream that most likely will never become reality. Instead you end up doing toilet icons. This is a brief look into a neglected niche of graphic design.

Japanese family crests

The origin of our daily dose of graphic design inspiration has a common cultural and geographic background. The presence of graphic design from Japan in book shelves and blogs doesn’t do it’s qualities justice — perhaps much is simply lost in translation? (more…)

On a recent trip to Zurich, I rediscovered my admiration for Swiss graphic design. I’m not referring to the impressive historic and well documented achievements of Brockmann, Ruder and others, nor the current output of ECAL or the likes of Lehni-Trüb.
