London Nobody Knows, a 1967 film by Norman Cohen is showing at London’s ICA in January. Presented by the slightly grumpy, very dry James Mason, it’s a tour of the murkier, unglamorous and threatened aspects of London life at the time.

Julius Shulman, renowned Architectural photographer most famous for his depiction of Modernism across California, died in July of this year. Having just moved to the Golden State, it seemed only fitting that I attended a screening of Eric Brickers documentary ‘Visual Acoustics’ to learn a little more about a man so acclaimed and respected, particularly in this part of the world. Gary Hustwit’s directional debut, Helvetica used the typeface as a starting point for a film about graphic design. In my experience all but the type nerds were put off by the title, which was a shame as it was an ideal introduction to what graphic and type designers do and how they influence our visual landscape. More

A close friend of mine is always keen to tell me that I’m too easily influenced by film reviews, too quick to take the word of a critic as gospel and that I’d generally be better off by passing the pages of a movie magazine and heading straight for the multiplex without someone else’s verdict floating around in the back of my head, pre-empting personal opinion. While watching Quantum of Solace recently I found myself distracted by two things. Firstly, the logistics of getting a corpse covered in oil through a hotel lobby, into a lift and onto a bed without being noticed and secondly, along with most of the design community, the type used at the beginning of every location change.
